Meta unveils ‘AI Universe’ integration across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp

Mark Zuckerberg announced at the Meta Connect conference that Meta will be implementing major AI updates across its applications and devices, such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The updates aim to integrate state-of-the-art AI into these widely used apps. Some of the new features include a beta rollout of an advanced conversational assistant available on various platforms, real-time information provided by Meta AI through a partnership with Microsoft Bing, and a tool for image generation called Emu. Meta AI is powered by the company’s open-source LLM technology.

In addition to these updates, Meta has launched 28 AIs in beta with unique interests and personalities, some of which are portrayed by cultural icons and influencers like Snoop Dogg, Tom Brady, Kendall Jenner, and Naomi Osaka. These AIs, referred to as a “new cast of characters,” have their own backstories. Alongside these developments, Meta introduced the AI Studio platform, allowing businesses to build AI chatbots for Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Furthermore, Meta plans to release a sandbox tool in the upcoming year that will enable anyone to experiment with creating their own AI.

Meta is also introducing new AI editing tools on Instagram that will allow users to edit and co-create images with friends. The tool utilizes Llama 2 and Meta’s new image generation model called Emu to turn text prompts into stickers. This feature will initially roll out to select English-language users on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook Stories. Lastly, Meta will be launching the Meta AI glasses collection on October 17, which can be controlled using voice commands by saying “Hey Meta.” However, Zuckerberg acknowledges that these updates are in the early stages and will require significant improvement based on user feedback.

Overall, Meta’s AI updates encompass a wide range of applications and devices, aiming to provide users with advanced conversational assistants, real-time information, image generation tools, and new AI chatbot capabilities. The company is also introducing an AI ‘cast of characters’ and an AI Studio platform for businesses. Furthermore, Meta is enhancing the image editing features on Instagram and launching Meta AI glasses collection, which can be controlled through voice commands. While these updates are still in the early stages, Meta aims to refine and improve them based on user feedback.
