LG joins the compact foldable laptop market.

LG has joined the trend of foldable laptops with its announcement of the LG Gram Fold. This laptop features a single large foldable display and can be used in various orientations. It can be folded upright for a traditional laptop experience, with a Bluetooth keyboard added for a 12-inch laptop setup. It can also be used as a tablet or as a computer with a 17-inch screen. The LG Gram Fold will be available in South Korea for 4.99 million won (around $3,697) from October 4th.

The display of the LG Gram Fold has a resolution of 1920 x 2560 and a peak brightness of 500 nits. It is built with a specialized material on the folding area to minimize creasing and is rated to survive 30,000 folding cycles. The laptop is powered by an Intel i5-1335U CPU with 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a 72Wh battery. It weighs 1250 grams and has a thickness of 19.9mm when folded and 9.4mm when unfolded. The Windows 11 machine comes with USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 ports, and it is stylus compatible.

With other companies like Lenovo, Asus, and HP also introducing foldable laptops, it is clear that this form factor is gaining popularity. LG’s announcement of the Gram Fold is a testament to the increasing adoption of foldable displays in laptops. As LG Display mass produces foldable panels and competitors like Samsung Display and BOE enter the market as well, it is expected that more laptop manufacturers will follow suit. However, there is still hope for future models to be more affordable.
