China Ready to Contribute to APEC’s Triumph Following Xi’s G20 Absence

Published on

China has expressed its willingness to play a constructive role in the success of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made this statement following President Xi Jinping’s absence at the annual Group of 20 (G20) summit in India. Wang emphasized China’s commitment to meeting the expectations of the international community as the world’s largest developing country and an important member of APEC. While there was no official explanation for Xi’s absence at the G20 summit, it led to concerns that China may be disengaging from the international community and building an alternative world order.

Amid tensions between China and the United States, there are growing expectations for Xi Jinping to meet with President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the APEC summit. The dialogue between the two countries has been gradually resuming, and APEC provides a possible opportunity for a face-to-face meeting between the leaders. However, Wang called on the United States to recognize its responsibility as the host of the summit and create better conditions for its smooth holding.

At the same time, Wang expressed China’s opposition to the “wanton” expansion of military alliances that squeeze the security space of other countries. Beijing has been critical of Washington’s efforts to deepen military alliances in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly the U.S. military bases in the Philippines facing Taiwan. China has long advocated partnerships rather than alliances and remains the sole ally of North Korea. The country is in communication with relevant parties and will make an announcement regarding Xi’s attendance at APEC in due time.
