Steam Families introduces parental controls for safer gaming experience

Steam has unveiled a new and improved feature called Steam Families, a revamp of its family sharing system that eliminates previous limitations. Unlike the older system that restricted the number of players sharing a library and required a separate setup for parental controls, Steam Families allows for seamless sharing of games among family members. Now, multiple users can access games simultaneously without interference, making it easier for families to enjoy their favorite titles together.

To access the new system, users must join the beta program by enabling the Steam Family Beta option in the settings menu. Once enrolled, creating a family and sharing your library with up to five members is a straightforward process. Additionally, the update removes the previous cap on the number of devices authorized for sharing and now supports offline play, enhancing the overall user experience for gamers within a shared family library.

Managing children’s access to games and setting time restrictions has also become more convenient with the enhanced parental controls in Steam Families. Parents can now approve game requests from their kids directly, eliminating the need for gift cards or sharing credit card information. However, it’s important to note that the new system is region-locked, preventing cross-country sharing, and individuals who leave a family cannot join or establish a new one for a year. Additionally, developers must approve titles for sharing, and certain games like free-to-play or those requiring third-party keys are not eligible for sharing through this feature.
