Spotify tests AI voice translation feature for podcasts: Breaking language barriers

Spotify, the streaming giant, is now venturing into AI voice translation. The company is piloting a new feature that translates podcasts recorded in English into other languages, using the original speaker’s voice. The tool, powered by Open AI’s voice-generating technology, is one of the first of its kind. The aim is to give listeners around the world a more authentic way to discover and be inspired by new podcasters.

Spotify has already collaborated with popular podcast hosts such as Dax Shepard, Monica Padman, Lex Fridman, Bill Simmons, and Steven Bartlett to translate their voices into other languages. Initially, a group of episodes from their respective podcasts is available in Spanish, with plans to release select episodes in French and German in the coming weeks. The feature is accessible to all users, regardless of whether they have a Premium membership. Additionally, Spotify intends to expand its roster of podcasts to include popular shows such as The Ringer’s “The Rewatchables” and Trevor Noah’s forthcoming podcast.

This recent development follows Spotify’s earlier launch of its AI DJ. With the introduction of voice translations, Spotify continues to demonstrate its commitment to innovating the listening experience through the integration of new technologies. By enabling listeners to access podcasts in different languages while maintaining the original speaker’s voice, Spotify aims to create a more immersive and inclusive platform for podcast enthusiasts worldwide.
