Nintendo has revealed that they initially included player collision in local multiplayer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but later decided to remove it. This is a departure from the New Super Mario Bros. series, where collision allowed players to interact by jumping off each other’s heads. However, Nintendo recognized that collision often led to chaos and decided to take it out. Director Shiro Mouri explained that removing collision reduces stress, especially in situations where players are on narrow platforms.
Despite the removal of collision, there are still ways for players to interact in co-op mode. Players can save their defeated friends by reaching their ghost form before time runs out. Additionally, if someone is playing as a Yoshi character, other players can jump on their back and ride them. Nintendo’s decision to remove collision aims to streamline gameplay and create a less stressful experience for players.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch on October 20, 2023. While opinions about the removal of collision may vary, Nintendo hopes that this design choice will improve the overall multiplayer experience for players.
