Powerful winds leave nearly 85,000 SMUD customers without power.

A powerful storm system is causing chaos in the Sacramento region, where wind gusts have reached 65 mph, resulting in trees and power lines being knocked down. This has left hundreds of thousands of people without power, with the number of affected customers fluctuating throughout the evening. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has reported more than 60 downed power lines, numerous trees impacting equipment, and downed power poles, expecting these numbers to increase as the assessment continues.

SMUD has mobilized over 80 crews to work around the clock to assess damage, make repairs, and restore power, although some outages are expected to continue overnight. They are urging customers to stay clear of downed power lines and to immediately report them to the relevant authorities. PG&E’s outage map also shows tens of thousands of customers without power. The National Weather Service is advising residents to prepare for power outages, difficult driving conditions, and downed trees due to the storm, similar to previous years. Officials are recommending that people prepare by having flashlights and charged electronic devices and by being cautious of driving conditions, particularly downed trees.
