Nvidia has reported record-breaking revenue for its second quarter of fiscal 2024, exceeding Wall Street’s expectations. The company recorded a Q2 revenue of $13.51 billion, a 101% increase year-over-year and sequentially. Nvidia’s data center segment experienced significant growth, with a 171% annual increase and a 141% increase sequentially, reaching $10.32 billion, which accounted for 76% of the total revenue for the quarter. The company’s ability to drive rapid product development, form strong alliances, and attract software developers to its platform has positioned Nvidia as a driving force behind the growth of AI and large language model (LLM) adoption.
The surge in revenue also contributed to a rise in gross margin to 71.2% in Q2, compared to 45.9% in the previous year. This increase in profitability allows Nvidia to invest more in research and development (R&D) and maintain its leading position in AI innovation. CEO Jensen Huang revealed that the company is on track to launch a new product or platform every six months. The exceptional demand for data center products, particularly for generative AI and LLMs, played a significant role in Nvidia’s record-breaking quarter.
Data center revenue has become Nvidia’s largest segment, with a 171% growth over the past year and a total of $10.3 billion in revenue. Nvidia’s data center segment encompasses server graphics processing units (GPUs), networking, and AI cloud software. The company’s success in this area reflects the increasing demand for AI in enterprises and validates the significance of gen AI and LLMs. CFO Colette Kress stated that the demand for data center growth is substantial and extends well into the next year. Nvidia’s strong presence in the data center market is driven by the demand from hyperscale cloud service providers and large internet companies investing in infrastructure for LLMs and gen AI.
To maintain its leadership in AI workload accelerated computing, Nvidia is doubling down on R&D by investing heavily in next-generation platforms like its Hopper architecture. In Q2 FY2024, the company spent $2.04 billion on R&D, demonstrating its commitment to innovative technologies. Nvidia is also focusing on its AI software stack, including the Nvidia AI Enterprise suite, which facilitates easier development and deployment of AI solutions using Nvidia accelerators. By prioritizing R&D and complete AI infrastructure, Nvidia is well-positioned to meet the increasing demand for enterprise AI, even amidst growing competition.
