A tragic mass shooting in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood left an 8-year-old girl dead and at least 10 others injured, including three children. The incident occurred late Saturday night when police responded to a ShotSpotter alert and found 11 gunshot victims at the scene. The young girl was struck in the head and pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital, while a 1-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy were critically injured with multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen.
Among the injured was also a 9-year-old child with a graze wound to the finger, who was listed in good condition at an area hospital. A 36-year-old man was shot in the arm and back, and was listed in critical condition by police. Additionally, six more victims were wounded in the shooting but were reported to be in good condition at area hospitals. The exact circumstances of the incident are still under investigation, but witnesses reported that an individual in a black sedan fired multiple shots into a crowd before fleeing the scene.
Police are currently searching for the suspects involved in the mass shooting, as no one has been taken into custody yet. The community is reeling from the tragic loss of the young girl and the senseless violence that injured numerous innocent bystanders, including young children.
