In October of 2020, Google One launched a VPN service that promised an extra layer of online protection for Android users. However, Google recently announced that the VPN by Google One will be discontinued in the coming months. Despite initially being available on all plans and platforms, the company found that the feature was not being utilized by users as expected.
The VPN service was lauded for providing peace of mind and data security, with Google publishing a white paper detailing how it works. Despite undergoing third-party audits and open sourcing client APIs, the company has decided to shut down the VPN feature to refocus on supporting more in-demand features with Google One. As part of their efforts to streamline services, Google will be directing existing users to third-party VPN alternatives.
While the VPN feature is being phased out, users of the free Pixel VPN introduced with the Pixel 7 series in 2022 will not be affected. Additionally, a new VPN upgrade introduced with the Pixel 8 will be made available to older Pixel models in June, offering built-in service without persistent notifications. Overall, Google is realigning its offerings to cater to the evolving needs of its user base.
