FedEx’s New Robot Efficiently Loads Delivery Trucks in 3D Tetris Style

A new robot developed by startup Dexterity for FedEx is using artificial intelligence (AI) to stack boxes in warehouses. The robot uses generative AI to determine how to stack boxes of different shapes and identifies and grabs the boxes using AI as well. Through careful engineering, the systems are combined to create a cohesive robot capable of efficiently stacking packages. The growth of ecommerce, particularly with companies like Amazon, has made package handling a key area for robot development. FedEx already uses robot technology from Berkshire Grey to sort parcels in its facilities. While the robot is still being perfected, it is expected to eventually load a truck as quickly as a skilled human.

The development of AI and machine learning in recent years has led to their application in various industries, including robotics. Matthew Johnson-Roberson, director of the robotics institute at Carnegie Mellon University, believes we are witnessing the beginning of a wave of commercial robots entering the workforce. The robot developed by Dexterity for FedEx demonstrates the potential for AI in warehouse operations. By utilizing forces feedback, cameras, and depth sensors, the robot stacks packages tightly and adapts its stacking plan as it goes. This advancement is especially relevant in the era of ecommerce, where efficient package handling is crucial.

While the integration of AI and robotics offers exciting possibilities for increased efficiency and cost reduction, it also raises concerns about job displacement. The ongoing strike by US auto workers is partially related to technological trends in the industry, including automation. However, FedEx remains optimistic about the impact of robots on their operations. The company has already invested $200 million in robot technology from Berkshire Grey, and the capabilities demonstrated by Dexterity’s robot could be extended to additional tasks within FedEx’s operations. Despite the lack of specific details, FedEx sees this development as a significant improvement to their operations and expects such next-generation capabilities to enhance their efficiency.
