Disney clamps down on password sharing restrictions

Published on

Disney Plus will begin cracking down on password sharing in Canada starting on November 1st. The company sent an email to Canadian subscribers announcing this change, stating that they will be implementing restrictions on sharing account credentials outside of the household. The updated Help Center emphasizes that subscription sharing is not allowed, and failure to comply with the policy could result in account limits or termination. This move comes after CEO Bob Iger mentioned during Disney’s Q3 earnings call that they were actively exploring ways to address shared accounts, as a significant number of people are currently sharing passwords across Disney’s services.

Disney Plus is not the only streaming service taking action against password sharing. Netflix has been testing similar restrictions for over a year and started cracking down in the US in May 2023. Netflix’s policy restricts accounts based on the user’s IP address, allowing subscribers to add additional members for an extra fee depending on their selected plan. Despite potential inconvenience, Canadian users of Disney Plus now enjoy access to a cheaper ad-supported tier. It seems the streaming wars are intensifying and becoming more costly for consumers.
