X is continuing to face performance challenges following a data center outage that disrupted the site several days ago. On Saturday morning, users reported difficulties with feed loading. According to reports, the site became inaccessible for many around 8 AM ET, with Downdetector highlighting a significant surge in problem reports. Although the site has since resumed operation, performance issues persist.
In an update provided on Friday night, X’s engineering team acknowledged the ongoing issues stemming from the previous day’s data center outage. They noted that login and signup services are not available for some users, and there are potential delays in notifications and premium features. The team is actively working to resolve these problems.
The company’s developer platform page indicated that a "site-wide outage" started at 11 AM PT on Thursday, May 22, and was reportedly resolved by 10:35 AM PT Friday morning. However, degraded performance in some login features is still being experienced. X has not yet commented officially on the persisting technical issues since an update on Thursday afternoon, which noted that a data center outage was causing performance difficulties for some users.
Reports from Downdetector.com, a website that monitors online service outages, showed an increase in user reports about issues with accessing direct messages and other features. Although the company has not explained the prolonged outage, the timing coincides with a reported fire at an X data center in Oregon on Thursday. Wired reported that firefighters were called to a fire at a data center leased by X near Portland, Oregon, at 10:21 AM PT on Thursday. The full extent of the damage is unclear, but fire crews reportedly spent several hours on-site, and batteries were identified as a contributing factor to the fire.
X has not addressed inquiries regarding the fire or the disclosed data center outage. This is not the first data center-related issue for X. Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company in 2022, a decision was made to relocate the company’s servers from California to Oregon to reduce costs, despite engineers advising that the move would take months. Musk expedited the process within weeks, which, according to his biographer, led to technical problems and a Federal Trade Commission investigation.
Update, May 24, 2025, 11:07 AM ET: This report has been updated to reflect ongoing performance issues and includes the latest information from X regarding the outage. Previous updates have been incorporated into the story above.
