Vice President Harris Appeals to Discontented Republicans: NPR

Published on

Vice President Kamala Harris recently engaged in outreach to Republican voters who may be seeking alternatives to former President Donald Trump. She articulated her position during an interview on Fox News and through a visit to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where her speech was endorsed by numerous Republicans. The event was attended by NPR’s national political correspondent, Sarah McCammon.

Harris perceives an opportunity to connect with moderate Republicans who are uneasy about Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. At the event, she was accompanied by notable figures such as former Congressman Adam Kinzinger and former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan, among others. Harris emphasized her appeal by alluding to a well-known quote from Ronald Reagan, a former Republican President, asserting that America remains a “shining city upon a hill” that continues to inspire globally. The chosen venue for her address, Washington Crossing State Park in Pennsylvania, holds historic significance as it marks the site where George Washington crossed the Delaware River during the Revolutionary War. Harris described Trump as posing a risk to the foundational principles of America.

During her interview with Fox’s Bret Baier, Harris faced questions predominantly concerning immigration and border security, critical issues for many voters, including Republicans. Baier also inquired about how Harris’ presidency might differ from President Biden’s. Harris highlighted that her administration would not simply continue Biden’s presidency, noting her diverse professional background outside Washington and her intent to engage more with Republicans and their initiatives, such as aiding small businesses. Furthermore, she reiterated her commitment to include a Republican in her Cabinet if elected.

Harris targets moderate Republicans, notably those who might have supported Nikki Haley during the primaries. Barry Myers from Glenside, Pennsylvania, attended the event and acknowledged that while many Republicans remain staunch supporters of Trump, he and his moderate Republican friends are inclined towards Harris. Despite this, Trump maintains approximately 80% favorability within the Republican Party.
