Unity has recently made efforts to improve its standing with game developers by launching Unity 6 globally. This latest version includes new features such as tools designed for targeting mobile web platforms. Additionally, the company has committed to providing long-term resources to enhance its feature sets and introduce new functionalities, all while ensuring ease of upgrades and maintaining stability, as stated in a press release.

Unity, known as a widely-used game development engine for popular titles like Among Us and Hollow Knight, has encountered challenges in recent times. The release of Unity 6 comes after a period of difficulty for the company, which charges developers on a per-user basis. In September 2023, Unity announced a new pricing structure that charged developers per game install after surpassing a certain threshold. This potential increase in costs led to significant frustration among many developers.

The company’s leadership expressed a desire to rebuild relationships with their clientele. “With the release of Unity 6, we’re interested in reconnecting with customers and helping them understand that it’s our commitment to deliver what matters to them, and that we’re going to be a fundamentally different company in that regard,” stated Matt Bromberg to CNBC.

As Unity continues to navigate its relationship with developers, it also faces competition from Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. Epic’s CEO, Tim Sweeney, outlined their plans for the coming decade in a recent interview, which includes ongoing development of Unreal Engine 6, the next major release of their product.
