The bird logo that once symbolized Twitter, and was removed from its previous headquarters in San Francisco after Elon Musk rebranded the platform to X, has been auctioned for nearly $35,000. RR Auction reported that the emblem sold for $34,375, falling short of its estimated $40,000 value. The auction house, which specializes in rare and collectible items, did not reveal the buyer’s identity.
The bird sign, weighing approximately 560 pounds and measuring roughly 12 feet by 9 feet, was a notable feature of the social media platform. Introduced in 2012, it served as Twitter’s mascot until 2023, when the rebranding occurred following Musk’s acquisition of the company.
The auction house’s website noted the logo was affectionately nicknamed “Larry” in honor of Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird. It represented Twitter during a period of significant popularity and influence over an 11-year span. Although Twitter and its recognizable light blue bird logo have been retired, the symbol remains an icon in tech and social media history, comparable to symbols like Nike and Apple.
Previously, Musk had also auctioned other items from the former Twitter, including various signs, memorabilia, kitchen equipment, and office furniture. Notably, other auctioned tech history items included an Apple-1 computer with accessories, which sold for $375,000, an Apple Computer Co. check signed by Steve Jobs in 1976 for $112,054, and an unopened first-generation 4GB iPhone for $87,514.
