Vice President Kamala Harris made an appearance on Fox News in an effort to appeal to Republican voters seeking an alternative to former President Donald Trump. During the interview with anchor Bret Baier, discussions included her immigration policy and positions from her 2019 presidential campaign. Harris also visited Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where she was joined by several Republicans who have endorsed her during a speech.

During the interview, NPR’s Sarah McCammon noted that Harris did not directly answer questions about what she would do differently from President Joe Biden. Harris stated that she has spent much of her career outside Washington and expressed a willingness to collaborate with Republicans on policy issues. McCammon observed that most attendees at Harris’s Pennsylvania event were either Democrats or Republicans who opposed Trump, making it challenging to determine Harris’s influence on her campaign.

Former President Donald Trump, during a Univision town hall near Miami, focused on his appeal to Latino voters by highlighting his economic record. He made references to January 6 as a “day of love” and reiterated unfounded claims about Haitian migrants. Both Harris and Trump are actively seeking the Latino vote, which could be pivotal in key swing states. NPR’s Franco Ordoñez reported that Trump argued the Latino community fared better economically during his presidency. Trump also addressed plans to reduce energy costs and inflation, though his comments about immigration shifted towards the topic of crimes related to illegal immigrants. Despite controversy over his rhetoric, Trump is garnering support, especially among second and third-generation Latino families.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in Brussels to discuss with European Union leaders his strategy to conclude the war with Russia by the end of the following year, while retaining all Ukrainian territories. Zelenskyy also urged Western allies to prompt Ukraine’s NATO membership, a move met with caution by some allies, including the U.S., due to concerns about provoking Russia. NPR’s Joanna Kakissis reported that Zelenskyy conveyed to lawmakers that some Western allies have pressured him towards negotiations with Russia under perceived unfair terms. He underscored the necessity of a security guarantee, such as NATO membership, to safeguard Ukraine. Zelenskyy’s victory plan includes Ukraine’s ability to conduct military operations within Russia using Western-supplied advanced weapons, a stance not supported by the U.S., which fears it might escalate the conflict.

In Alabama, a pilot program will allocate $280,000 from opioid settlement funds to aid grandparents and other extended family members who have become primary caregivers due to the opioid crisis. According to a report from Generations United, over 2.5 million children in the U.S. are being raised by relatives other than their parents, often to prevent foster care placements. Advocates argue that while the estimated $1,000 to $2,000 per family is insufficient for covering child-rearing costs, it marks a positive initial effort. These “grandfamilies” often lack access to welfare programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and the funds aim to help with various expenses including groceries, bills, and recreational activities. The state is presently distributing its first round of settlement funds and anticipates additional funding in the following decade.
