Tax preparer sentenced to prison for creating fake returns to steal millions.

An Essex County tax preparer, Omar Khater, was sentenced to nearly five years in prison for his involvement in a fraudulent scheme that resulted in the illegal collection of $4.49 million in tax refunds. Khater, along with a relative named Walid Khater, pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges related to wire fraud and defrauding the IRS. The two men were accused of using stolen identities to file false tax returns claiming fictitious income from gambling and lottery winnings.

Prosecutors alleged that the Khaters collaborated with others to steal personal information and submit fraudulent tax documents to the IRS in order to claim substantial refunds. They used identities of individuals, including one who was incarcerated during the period that tax returns were filed under their name. The Khaters opened bank accounts and utilized a UPS store mailbox to receive mail addressed to the incarcerated individual, furthering their deceitful scheme. Despite the sentencing, Omar Khater expressed remorse for his actions through his attorney, while no immediate comment was provided by Walid’s lawyer.
