In a court filing on Friday, it was revealed that “Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed expressed frustration with the judge, prosecutor, and jurors involved in her involuntary manslaughter case. Gutierrez Reed was convicted for loading a live bullet into Alec Baldwin’s gun, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The prosecutor sought the maximum sentence of 18 months, citing Gutierrez Reed’s lack of contrition as evidenced by her recorded calls where she blamed others for the tragedy.
According to the prosecutor, Gutierrez Reed complained about the jurors, accused the judge of being “paid off,” and expressed a desire for others, including Baldwin and the producers, to go to jail instead of her. Despite her lack of remorse, Gutierrez Reed mentioned to her confidants that she was doing well in jail, indicating a detached perspective on the situation. The prosecutor also requested that the judge categorize Gutierrez Reed’s crime as a “serious violent offense,” which would limit potential sentence reductions for good behavior.
In response, Gutierrez Reed’s defense team has asked for probation instead of jail time, presenting letters from friends to emphasize her remorse. Her father launched a GoFundMe campaign for her appeal, arguing that the judicial system has been unfair towards her. However, GoFundMe shut down the fundraiser due to a policy against supporting legal defense for charges related to violent crimes, adding another complication to Gutierrez Reed’s situation as her sentencing approaches.
