Sennheiser has introduced a new portable wireless microphone kit aimed at content creators and videographers seeking an affordable and versatile all-in-one solution. The Profile Wireless system comprises a wireless receiver compatible with various devices, two compact clip-on transmitters equipped with built-in microphones that can be utilized as handheld or tabletop mics, and a mobile charger.
The Profile Wireless kit by Sennheiser is set to be available for shipping in late 2024 or early 2025, with preorders starting today at a price of $299. This price point is more economical compared to the $349 DJI Mic 2 kit and the $499 Shure MoveMic system when combined with a wireless receiver. While Rode’s Wireless Go II kit is also priced at $299, it does not include an on-the-go charging solution.
The charging bar of the Profile Wireless system includes a battery of 2,000mAh capacity. The Profile Wireless microphones are comparable in size to DJI Mic 2’s and can be attached to clothing using either a rear clip or a magnet, allowing for flexible placement options. For those preferring a higher-quality or more discreet lavalier microphone, the transmitter features a lockable 3.5mm connector for external mic attachments.
The microphones are pre-paired with a two-channel receiver, operating on a 2.4GHz wireless frequency with a range of over 800 feet in clear conditions. This range decreases to approximately 490 feet if obstacles interfere with the line of sight. Battery life for the microphones and the wireless receiver is approximately seven hours, and they can all be recharged on the go using the included 2,000mAh charging bar.
Each microphone has 16GB of built-in storage and offers a “Backup Recording Mode,” which activates if the connection to the wireless receiver becomes unstable. Additionally, a “Safety Channel Mode” records a second copy of the audio at a lower level to prevent clipping or distortion from loud sounds.
The included wireless receiver can connect to laptops, mobile devices, or cameras via a cable or charging port adapter. The system requires a connection through an included USB-C or Lightning adapter for mobile devices, a USB-C cable for computers, or an audio cable for cameras due to the absence of Bluetooth in the Profile Wireless system. The receiver features an OLED screen displaying audio levels and mic charge status, with a gyro sensor enabling automatic screen rotation.
Sennheiser provides a solution for those finding it challenging to use a small clip-on mic for impromptu interviews. By attaching one of the microphones to the charging bar and adding a foam windscreen, users can create a larger, easier-to-handle microphone suitable for handheld use or tabletop placement. While its shape might prompt questions, this feature enhances the flexibility of a cost-effective microphone kit already offering significant functionality.
