Senators Finally Release Border Deal, Here’s the Impact.

Published on

Lawmakers in the United States on Sunday announced a $118 billion package which includes a bipartisan deal to address the migrant crisis at the southern border, as well as new aid for Ukraine, Israel, and other U.S. allies. However, the proposal has already faced sharp criticism from across the political spectrum, making the odds of its passage uncertain. The bill will allow leaders to evaluate the 370-page text of the legislation for themselves and make an informed decision.

The plan to address the migrant crisis will expand detention capacity and make it harder for people to qualify for asylum, while allowing migrants who can claim credible fear to stay in the country and work. It also includes an additional $20 billion in funding to expand the Department of Homeland Security’s ability to address the crisis and makes it easier for the agency to hire additional employees. Furthermore, the legislation would end the practice of “catch and release” and create a new, voluntary program for migrants to return to their home countries. However, there is significant opposition to the bill from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, indicating a contentious path forward in Congress.

President Joe Biden has thrown his support behind the bill, calling it the “toughest and fairest set of border reforms in decades.” However, opposition from former President Donald Trump, House Republicans, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, among others, has complicated the path to passage. Meanwhile, Biden has pledged to take immediate action to “shut down” the southern border if Congress approves the package, further highlighting the contentious nature of the proposed legislation.
