The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) introduced a dedicated Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI) outreach cell on Wednesday, intended to enhance and streamline the investment experience in the Indian securities market. This initiative will involve direct engagement with Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) and support their seamless entry into the Indian securities market, according to a statement from Sebi.
The outreach cell operates under Sebi’s Alternative Investment Fund and Foreign Portfolio Investors Department (AFD). Its primary responsibilities include assisting prospective FPIs during the pre-application stage by providing aid with documentation and compliance processes. The cell will also extend support throughout the onboarding phase and address any operational challenges encountered during or after the registration process.
Ketan Mukhija, Senior Partner at Burgeon Law, commented that these FPI cells are designed to offer targeted support and streamline operations for foreign investors, facilitating easier navigation of the Indian financial markets. The simplified registration process is seen as reducing barriers to entry, thus promoting quicker and more efficient onboarding of FPIs.
Overall, these initiatives demonstrate Sebi’s dedication to attracting more foreign capital, enhancing market integrity, and making India a more appealing destination for global investors, Mukhija added.
