SAG-AFTRA members grant major approval for potential video game strike.

Published on

SAG-AFTRA members have voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a strike on the Interactive Media Agreement (IMA) that covers their work on video games. Out of the 34,687 ballots cast, 98.32% voted in favor of the measure. However, the strike authorization does not mean an immediate strike will occur. The union has been negotiating with video game companies since October 2022, but has not seen meaningful engagement on critical issues such as compensation, the unregulated use of AI, and safety. If an agreement cannot be reached, the union may resort to strike action.

The use of AI is a particularly important issue for performers in the video game industry, as their motion capture performances could potentially be used without their consent or compensation to train AI systems. The ongoing strike by SAG-AFTRA for film and television also raises similar concerns regarding compensation and regulations on the use of AI. The union hopes that the strike authorization will provide additional leverage in the negotiations with the studios. The next bargaining session is scheduled for September 26-28.

The overwhelming support for the strike authorization highlights the shared challenges faced by workers in the video game and film/television industries. Both groups are seeking fair compensation, better safety measures, and the ability to work with dignity. The union emphasizes the importance of reaching an agreement that addresses these issues and supports the livelihoods of its members. SAG-AFTRA hopes that the authorization will pressure the video game companies to engage in more meaningful negotiations and offer a fair deal.
