Earlier this year, it was announced that Danny Boyle and Alex Garland would return to the zombie genre with 28 Years Later, a continuation of the well-known post-apocalyptic series that last appeared in 2007. The film marks the first in a planned series of at least three movies and will feature prominent actors such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, alongside returning star Cillian Murphy.
Not much information has been released about the film since the initial announcement; however, Ralph Fiennes recently shared some details about the plot. While promoting his new film Conclave, Fiennes told IndieWire that the story is set 28 years after the resurgence of the Rage Virus, which has once again plunged Britain into chaos. The central narrative follows a young boy seeking a doctor to aid his dying mother. Instead of venturing out alone, he takes his mother through picturesque northern English landscapes, where they encounter a doctor described as a "force for good."
Although the cast of 28 Years Later is entirely composed of adult actors, their specific roles in the storyline remain undisclosed, and little is known about the fate of Murphy’s character, Jim. Fiennes also mentioned that two out of the three planned movies have already been filmed. The second film is titled The Bone Temple and is directed by Nia DaCosta of The Marvels. While it is not clear if the compassionate doctor will appear in the second installment, it is confirmed that Murphy will feature, as he was seen filming scenes for Temple in September.
Further details about what 28 Years Later will entail and how it will expand the 28 Days saga are anticipated ahead of its scheduled release on June 20, 2025.
