Potential for ads in Windows 11 Start menu for beta testers.

Published on

Microsoft is considering the placement of advertisements for apps in the Start menu of Windows 11. This move follows a similar practice in Windows 10, where ads were also displayed for downloadable apps. Currently, only US-based Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel will see these ads, with the option to disable them by adjusting settings in the Personalization section under Settings. While this is an experimental feature that may not see a wide release, Microsoft has a history of incorporating ads into its desktop platforms, including promotional spots for services like OneDrive.

Users who have extensively used Windows 10 may feel a sense of deja vu as Microsoft looks to introduce ads in the Start menu of Windows 11. The advertisements will mainly focus on promoting apps available in the Microsoft Store, providing users with recommendations for downloads. It is important to note that only beta testers in the US will currently see these ads, with the option to deactivate them through simple settings adjustments. Microsoft has previously tested similar ad placements in its platforms, hinting at a potential trend in integrating ads across its various operating systems.

This strategic move by Microsoft to include ads in the Windows 11 Start menu highlights the company’s efforts to monetize its platforms through app promotions. Users can take control of their ad experience by disabling recommendations in settings, reflecting Microsoft’s commitment to providing customization options. While the outcome of this experiment remains uncertain, it underscores the evolving landscape of technology and advertising, with companies like Microsoft exploring new ways to engage users and generate revenue.
