Jean-Luc Picard’s tastes in food and drink have often been a topic of discussion, especially concerning his preference for Earl Grey tea. However, his and the Starfleet of the 2360s’ taste in mug design is universally recognized for its excellence. This has been highlighted by the decision to reintroduce a real-world mug used in Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), which was discontinued almost a decade ago.
Master Replicas announced it will release a new “Picard Cup,” replicating the design used in TNG, Voyager, and Star Trek: Picard. This venture is in collaboration with Bodum, the original homeware company that provided the mugs for the TNG art department. Designed as part of Bodum’s BISTRO system in 1974 by Carsten Jørgensen, the mug remained popular due to its iconic, simple retro-future design and its association with Star Trek. It was available until 2016 before being discontinued.
Bodum and Master Replicas are reviving the design in a limited run of four-mug packs, faithfully replicating the original glass and plastic design. The only modification is that the new mugs will feature the logos of Star Trek, Bodum, and Master Replicas etched on the bottom. This minor change is considered a small price for fans who wish to emulate Captain Picard’s refined habits. The actual price for the set of four mugs is $55, with pre-orders available now ahead of a February 2025 release.
