Metro train derails near Potomac Yard to National Airport – NBC4 Washington

Published on

A Metrorail train derailed between the Potomac Yard and National Airport stations in Northern Virginia, causing no injuries. The incident involved a 7000-series train, which had previously been taken out of service after a derailment in October 2021. It was discovered that the wheels on these railcars had been moving outward, leading to the derailment. Metro had recently approved a plan to return all 7000-series trains to service. The derailment occurred at a low speed near the airport, and if it had been more severe, the outcome could have been worse.

Following the derailment, Blue and Yellow line service was briefly suspended between the National Airport and Potomac Yard stations, with shuttle buses provided as an alternative. Trains are now single-tracking through the area, causing delays. The 7000-series cars make up about 60% of Metro’s fleet and were supposed to be stronger and longer-lasting. However, issues with the wheels have raised concerns, and investigations are ongoing. If Metro is ordered to pull these trains out of service again, it could significantly impact the progress and reliability of the transit system, requiring the use of older, less reliable railcars and additional expenses for repairs.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Metro in ensuring the safety and reliability of its fleet. The derailment occurred in a tricky location on elevated tracks outside the airport, emphasizing the need for thorough inspections and maintenance. The 7000-series trains were expected to be the backbone of Metro’s operations, but the issues with the wheels have raised doubts about their safety. Metro had previously increased the frequency of inspections following the 2021 derailment but has yet to find a definitive solution. If the 7000-series trains are once again removed from service, it will have significant consequences for Metro and its passengers, potentially causing delays and requiring costly repairs.
