Former Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield and his wife Stephanie are facing felony charges for embezzling public and private funds to support a luxurious lifestyle of extravagant dining, upscale hotels, and trips to exotic destinations. The charges include conducting a criminal enterprise, embezzlement, conspiracy, and larceny. The investigation revealed that Chatfield improperly charged personal expenses to public and political funds, including family vacations and luxury purchases.
The couple allegedly used a variety of schemes, such as a “check kickback” scheme and subletting an apartment paid for by a nonprofit fund for personal benefit. Additionally, Chatfield is accused of overcharging for mileage reimbursements by reporting trips he never took. The charges have been deemed politically motivated by Chatfield’s attorney, Mary Chartier, who vows to fight them every step of the way.
The financial crimes investigation stemmed from initial allegations of sexual assault made by Chatfield’s sister-in-law, which led to a broader probe into campaign finance violations. Attorney General Dana Nessel called for stricter campaign finance and nonprofit laws in response to the case, highlighting the dark money culture in Lansing.
