FOX Business host Larry Kudlow has raised concerns regarding the security provided to former President Donald Trump. Kudlow questioned the clarity of Trump’s current level of protection on the campaign trail after two assassination attempts.
Kudlow highlighted that following an attempt on Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania, the Secret Service communicated to some House members that Trump was receiving presidential-level protection. Despite these claims, a subsequent assassination attempt at Trump’s Florida golf course revealed a lack of outside perimeter protection and insufficient security resources. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw stated, “He’s not the sitting President. If he was, we would’ve had this entire golf course surrounded, but because he’s not, security is limited to the areas that the Secret Service deems possible.”
This inconsistency was further muddled by a statement from Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who described Trump’s security as aligning approximately with that of a sitting president, without offering clear specifics.
A bipartisan House bill was recently passed, establishing uniform security standards for presidents, vice presidents, and major White House candidates. This bill mandates presidential protection for Trump, providing a clear directive absent in previous statements. Former DHS Secretary Chad Wolf emphasized the need for a “threat-based” resource model, highlighting Trump’s significantly different threat profile compared to other candidates.
Despite these security lapses, Trump has remained appreciative of the Secret Service and local law enforcement. At a recent event in Long Island, Trump thanked the agents and officers involved in thwarting the attempt on his life at the golf course.
Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe acknowledged communication deficiencies at the Butler, Pennsylvania rally and admitted failures in preparation and guidance. Rowe mentioned ongoing internal reviews and disciplinary actions but failed to provide concrete solutions to the recent issues.
Kudlow’s commentary underscores the urgency of addressing these security gaps to ensure the safety of all presidential candidates, irrespective of party affiliation. As the presidential campaign proceeds with 46 days remaining, comprehensive protection remains a critical concern.
