Intel has announced the release of microcode update 0x12B to motherboard manufacturers, aimed at mitigating one of the root causes of damage in existing chips that are experiencing instability. This update is designed to prevent the Intel CPU from drawing excessive power during idle or light tasks, a condition that can lead to premature aging of the chip due to over-voltage.
The company indicated that it might take several weeks for motherboard manufacturers to validate and distribute the BIOS updates incorporating this new microcode. However, Intel does not recommend waiting for the latest updates before taking action. Previous BIOS updates already include two earlier microcode fixes from Intel that help prevent damage and offer new power settings that could also mitigate risks.
Intel has yet to provide information on how many Raptor Lake chips have been affected by these and other instability issues, nor have they identified specific batches impacted by a previous oxidization issue. They are currently seeking additional updates on these matters.
