Jan-Bart van Beek, the art and animation director at Guerrilla Games, has officially revealed that a remastered edition of Horizon Zero Dawn will be released on October 31. This updated version boasts more than 10 hours of re-recorded audio, motion capture enhancements, as well as improved character models, animations, lighting, and textures. These upgrades aim to elevate the game’s visual fidelity to match that of Horizon Forbidden West. The remaster has been optimized for PlayStation 5 and compatible PCs, and it will also support the upcoming PS5 Pro, set for release on November 7.
In his statement, van Beek noted that significant advancements in computer graphics have emerged over the seven years since the game’s original launch. The Dutch video game developer Nixxes worked on the remaster, incorporating enhanced audio and Atmos rendering to create a more immersive experience. The remastered edition will also include The Frozen Wilds expansion, complete with its additional lands, machines, and skills. The PC version will support ultra-wide resolutions and performance-boosting technologies such as NVIDIA’s DLSS 3 AI-based rendering accelerator.
The remaster retains the original game’s accessibility features like remappable controls and haptic feedback cues, and introduces an optional feature that alerts players to interactable elements using sound and haptic feedback.
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will be available for purchase at $50. However, owners of the original game or the complete edition can upgrade to the remastered version for $10, applicable to both the PS5 and PC versions available via Steam or the Epic Games Store. This $10 upgrade is also available to players who acquired the game through Sony’s Play at Home program during the pandemic. For those upgrading with a PS4 game disc, it must be inserted into the console each time to play, making this option unavailable for owners of the disc-free version of PS5.
