The 2020 PlayStation hit Ghost of Tsushima is set to receive a sequel, introducing a new protagonist, era, and landscape. Titled Ghost of Yōtei, this sequel is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 in 2025.
Ghost of Yōtei will feature a new Ghost named Atsu, who navigates the terrain at the base of Mount Yōtei in Ezo—modern-day Hokkaido—in the year 1603. This setting situates the sequel 300 years after the events of Tsushima, which focused on the Mongol invasion of the region. The year 1603 depicts Yōtei as not being under Japanese rule. The debut trailer showcases expansive grasslands, snowy forests, and sun-drenched ridges adorned with wildflowers, all portrayed with dynamic breezes. The soundtrack carries a distinct cowboy influence, especially noticeable as Atsu interacts with wild horses. Additionally, she encounters a wolf, adding to the intrigue.
Sucker Punch, via the PlayStation Blog, highlighted that unlike Tsushima, Yōtei during that period lacked organized samurai clans. This absence provided the foundation for the sequel’s new and original narrative.
Ghost of Yōtei marks the first title that Sucker Punch has entirely developed for the PS5. Andrew Goldfarb, Sucker Punch’s communications manager, elaborated on the enhancements made possible by the new setting. He mentioned significant improvements like expansive sightlines, new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, and more realistic vegetation movement produced by wind. Furthermore, he hinted at the introduction of new gameplay mechanics, improvements, and weapons, with more details to be revealed in the future.
