Nearly 90,000 tabletop fire pits intended for both indoor and outdoor use have been recalled following reports of injuries due to flames escaping the containers, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall affects approximately 89,500 Colsen-branded fire pits.
The CPSC has advised consumers to immediately cease using the recalled fire pits and to dispose of them properly. Consumers are also urged not to resell the affected products.
The recalled fire pits pose a risk of causing burns in less than a second, which can be severe and potentially fatal. The design includes a concrete container with an open reservoir meant to hold burning liquid alcohol. There are seven models available, ranging from 5 to 18 inches in width, and they come in various shapes and colors, including gray or black in round, rectangular, hexagonal, square, or skull shapes. Each fire pit includes a flame extinguisher imprinted with the Colsen brand.
The manufacturer, having stopped sales less than a year after acquiring the product line, reportedly lacks the financial resources to offer any remedies to consumers.
These fire pits were distributed through various platforms, including Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair, Sharper Image, FlipShop, Grommet, Meta, and TikTok, from January 2020 to July 2024, with prices ranging from $40 to $90. They are produced by Colsen Fire Pits LLC, based in Miami, Florida, under product number 25-015.
There have been 31 reported incidents of flames escaping from the container, resulting in 19 burn injuries. Among these, two cases involved third-degree burns covering more than 40% of the victims’ bodies. Six injuries have necessitated surgery, extended medical treatment, admission to burn facilities, short-term disability, loss of function, physical therapy, or have led to permanent disfigurement.
