Director Discusses Balancing Meaningful and Gruesome Horror in ‘Clown in a Cornfield’

Published on

Eli Craig, recognized for his 2010 horror comedy “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil,” has a new film poised for release. “Clown in a Cornfield” is set in a small Midwestern town terrorized by a sinister presence, as suggested by the title. Craig discussed the film, highlighting its focus on deep themes intertwined with horror.

In a recent interview, Craig explained his approach to balancing humor and horror in the film. While “Clown in a Cornfield” contains comedy, it aims to present a more serious tone compared to his previous works. He expressed a desire to be known for more than comedic horror, striving for depth and emotional resonance in his movies.

The character Frendo, a clown with a corporate mascot backstory, serves as a metaphor for the American experience. Craig described the film as reflecting the economic struggles and generational divides within a small town. He emphasized his interest in combining absurdity with profound themes to create films that offer more than what appears on the surface.

The film also explores technology’s generational gap, as seen in scenes with outdated technology like rotary phones. Craig aimed for authentic reactions, allowing actors to improvise for natural results.

When discussing the film’s setting, Craig noted the inherent eeriness of cornfields and the logistical challenges of filming in them. Cornfields, with their towering stalks, can be disorienting and physically demanding on the cast and crew. Despite the harsh conditions, Craig praised the crew’s resilience.

Regarding potential sequels, Craig indicated an interest in continuing the story given the book series’ existing sequels, emphasizing admiration for author Adam Cesare. He also speculated about a crossover with “Tucker & Dale,” expressing hope that success with “Clown in a Cornfield” could lead to new projects, including a potential sequel for “Tucker & Dale.”

“Clown in a Cornfield” is scheduled for release in theaters on May 9.
