Celebrity chef Andrew Gruel appeared on ‘Varney & Co.’ to discuss how the outcome of the 2024 election could affect the restaurant industry in the United States. During the segment, Gruel praised former President Donald Trump for highlighting the role of the fry cook, often considered the toughest and most overlooked job in the food industry, during his McDonald’s visit.
Gruel emphasized that the fry cook’s position is seldom thought of compared to roles like the bartender or the chef, yet it is one of the most challenging. He noted that this role leaves employees going home with the scent of french fries, which his children particularly enjoy, and acknowledged the difficulty of the job.
In addition to highlighting the essential roles within the fast-food industry, Gruel described Trump’s appearance at McDonald’s as beneficial for his campaign. He acknowledged the staged nature of the stop but appreciated the humor and humility Trump displayed, considering it an impressive campaign move.
FOX Business host Stuart Varney supported Gruel’s view, labeling Trump’s visit to McDonald’s a “political success.” Earlier in the week, during a campaign event in Zebulon, Georgia, Trump attributed rising food costs to high energy prices, blaming the Biden administration for what he described as failures in managing American energy.
Gruel, like many other restaurateurs, has been contemplating which presidential candidate would best support the industry. He pointed out concerns over the substantial rise in the cost of goods under the Biden-Harris administration. Gruel remarked that during Trump’s tenure, costs were much lower, and there were significant opportunities in real estate, contrasting with the increased costs under the current administration. This abrupt increase led to delays in adjusting prices, affecting restaurant profit margins and resulting in closures across the industry.
In comparison, Gruel suggested that many in the restaurant sector might prefer a return to the policies seen during Trump’s administration.
