AT&T’s 5G Network Accelerates in Select Markets

AT&T has achieved full coverage of its enhanced 5G network in the greater Houston area, utilizing the C-band spectrum it acquired in 2021. The completion of the upgrade is four months ahead of schedule, thanks to satellite companies clearing the remaining spectrum faster than expected. This faster deployment of the C-band spectrum has allowed AT&T to boost the speed and capacity of its 5G network, resulting in increased speeds, reduced lag, better data capacities, and less congested towers in locations such as Austin, Boston, Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle. Over 175 million people now have access to AT&T’s mid-band 5G network.

AT&T’s investment in acquiring the C-band waves in 2021 and complementary mid-band spectrum in the following year amounted to $27.4 billion and $9.1 billion, respectively. Along with Verizon and T-Mobile, AT&T had to wait for satellite internet providers to vacate the spectrum, allowing terrestrial services to utilize it. Customers with 5G capable phones can connect to the C-band coverage without the need for device upgrades. However, AT&T has not provided information about whether existing customers will need to purchase new phones to access the full capabilities of the spectrum, though those already seeing a “5G+” icon on their phones are already connected.

The completion of AT&T’s enhanced 5G network in Houston serves as a testament to the company’s progress in upgrading its network infrastructure. The accelerated deployment of the C-band spectrum has contributed to notable improvements in capacity, speed, and performance, resulting in a more enhanced customer experience. With over 175 million people now covered by AT&T’s mid-band 5G network, the company continues to expand its reach, offering faster and more reliable connectivity in major cities across the United States. While the specific cities to be completed next have not been disclosed, AT&T’s focus on utilizing the additional mid-band spectrum signifies its commitment to staying at the forefront of 5G technology and its mission to provide customers with the latest advancements in wireless communication.
