Beeper by Automattic Unveils New Desktop and iOS App Designs

Published on

Last year, Automattic, the owner of WordPress.com, acquired the multi-service messaging app Beeper for $125 million, with plans to integrate it with Texts.com—another previous acquisition in the same domain. Following this merger, Beeper is now introducing a set of redesigned apps for iOS and desktop, which have been released in beta.

In a blog post, Beeper announced that the desktop application was developed using the foundation of the Texts.com app, while the iOS app was created from scratch. The company emphasized that these new applications are designed to be faster and more efficient in terms of battery usage.

Kishan Bagaria, founder of Texts.com, communicated on the platform X that users can continue using the old app. However, the company plans to offer a straightforward way to transition to the new applications in the future.

At present, the app utilizes Beeper Cloud for storing messages and credentials for other services. In forthcoming versions, this data will be stored on the device itself. Additionally, the new apps will feature on-device encryption to enhance privacy and security, and they will support multiple accounts linked to the same messaging service. Bagaria also noted that the Mac application will eventually enable users to send and receive iMessages.

Beeper was founded by Eric Migicovsky, who also established the Pebble smartwatch and is a partner at Y-Combinator. After the acquisition, Migicovsky took on the role of head of messaging for the company. Nonetheless, he recently announced a shift in focus back to developing Pebble.
