Apple Vision Pro’s launch day sales fell short of expectations

Published on

Despite much anticipation, the Apple Vision Pro failed to sell out on its launch day, defying expectations of limited day-one availability. The Vision Pro comes in three models, ranging from 256GB to 1TB in capacity, with the base model starting at $3,500 and the price escalating to $3,899 for the top-tier model. Even though the 256GB model sold out quickly and was back-ordered to March and beyond, the 512GB and 1TB variants did not sell out.

In a somewhat unusual move, the higher capacity Vision Pro units remained available for in-store pick-up the day after launch, despite the excitement built around the new addition to the Apple family. Estimates suggest that Apple may have had only 60,000 to 80,000 Vision Pro units available for launch day, but even so, the failure to sell out is surprising, given the hefty price tags attached to the device. Although the Vision Pro was hailed as ushering in the “era of spatial computing,” pre-launch media reviews raised concerns about the weight of the device and the underwhelming app experiences available at launch.

One concern raised during the initial round of media reviews highlighted issues surrounding the weight of the Vision Pro, which was revealed to weigh as much as a 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The scarcity of apps and experiences upon launch was another point of contention, with Apple itself only developing 15 spatialized stock apps for the device. Third-party interest also appears to be lacking, with major apps like Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify revealing that they have no immediate plans to create spatialized versions of their apps for the Vision Pro.
