Android 15 now allows selection of preferred wallet app.

Published on

Google has just released the first beta of Android 15, introducing a new feature that allows users to set a default wallet app on their devices. This feature enables users to choose a specific app to handle NFC payments, with Google Wallet being the default choice on Pixel devices. While other apps like the AMEX app also work with this setting, the full potential of this functionality is yet to be fully explored.

In the past, Android has gradually expanded the options for setting default apps, including assistants and notes apps. This new addition to Android 15 opens up the possibility for banking and credit card apps to also serve as default wallet apps in the future. This move by Google comes at a time when Apple is facing criticism for limiting the use of third-party apps as digital wallets on iOS, highlighting Android’s more open approach to app customization and user choice.

As the Android 15 beta evolves, users can expect more apps to support the default wallet app setting, offering a wider range of choices for handling transactions. This new feature brings a convenient and customizable experience to Android users, empowering them to personalize their device’s functionalities according to their preferences and needs. Overall, this development reflects Google’s commitment to enhancing user control and flexibility within the Android ecosystem.
