Amazon employees will be mandated to return to the office five days a week starting January 2, 2025.
In a memo sent to staff on Monday, CEO Andy Jassy communicated that the company has decided to revert to pre-COVID office attendance policies. Since May 2023, employees have been required to work from the office three days per week. Jassy highlighted that the last 15 months of at least three days per week in the office reinforced their belief in its benefits.
Jassy noted that while employees won’t need to be in the office for situations such as a sick child or a house emergency, remote work for two days a week will not be a standard practice as it was before the pandemic. Employees with approved exceptions will be permitted to remain remote.
Additionally, Jassy announced an increase in the ratio of individual contributors to managers company-wide by at least 15 percent by the end of Q1 2025. While he did not specifically mention layoffs, he emphasized that this change will be implemented thoughtfully and that reducing the number of managers will streamline and flatten the organization’s structure.
