Amazon is set to join Hollywood’s leading lobbying organization as its seventh member. Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios will officially become part of the Motion Picture Association (MPA) starting October 1. They will join established members Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Universal Studios, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Netflix, which joined the group in 2019.
Amazon has previously engaged with the MPA by participating in its Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment, an anti-piracy coalition, where it has served as a governing board member since 2017. MGM, which Amazon acquired in 2022, was a member of the MPA from 1928 until 2005.
MPA Chairman and CEO, Charles Rivkin, commented on the inclusion of Amazon’s entities in the association, stating, “The MPA is the global voice for a growing and evolving industry, and welcoming Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios to our ranks will broaden our collective policymaking and content protection efforts on behalf of our most innovative and creative companies.” Rivkin added that MPA studios significantly contribute to local economies, job creation, cultural enrichment, and community support. He expressed that with Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, the MPA’s influence in representing the world’s top storytellers will be enhanced even further.
Amazon’s membership in the MPA underscores the company’s significant role in the entertainment industry. The inclusion of both Amazon and Netflix in the association also underscores the considerable impact of streaming services on the industry as a whole.
