How the US Army’s 1959 ‘Soldier of Tomorrow’ Predicted Future Warfare

Published on

The Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS), part of the Army’s innovative developments, combines night vision goggles with a heads-up display that integrates sensor inputs into soldiers’ views. Based on an advanced version of Microsoft’s HoloLens 2, these smart goggles have faced challenges and criticisms similar to past helmet-mounted display experiments. Soldiers have reported issues such as headaches, nausea, and discomfort from extended use, impacting missions. The future of the delayed headset is uncertain, with discussions suggesting the Army might explore new contractors as part of its IVAS Next initiative. Despite these setbacks, the evolution of helmet-mounted night vision devices, like the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular (ENVG-B), surpasses previous expectations.

Regarding personal protective equipment, the combination of a bulletproof vest and camouflage suit worn by a soldier at an AUSA debut mirrors modern protective gear closer than the older flak jackets used during the Vietnam War. The Soldier Protection System (SPS) offers a modular set of protective equipment to enhance soldier survivability without compromising mobility. This system includes both soft armor for torso and extremity protection and hard armor with ceramic plates for ballistic protection against small arms.

While soldiers have equipment for ballistic protection, protecting against nuclear threats is a separate challenge. The Mission Oriented Protective Posture (MOPP) ensemble has long protected against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats. However, this system is distinct from the Soldier Protection System and standard-issue uniforms. Modern soldiers still rely on regulation-approved boots and gloves in irradiated environments, as specific protective gear like welded combat boots is not integrated into current systems.

In terms of weaponry, advancements have greatly surpassed the 1959 standard of the M14 rifle. The Army transitioned to the M16 in the 1960s and the M4 carbine more recently. Further developments in the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program have led to the XM7 rifle, which, while heavier than its predecessors, fulfills the long-standing promise of lighter weaponry. Additionally, the need for new high-velocity bullets has been met with the introduction of 6.8 mm rounds under the NGSW, offering superior performance in modern combat scenarios.

Some innovations from past military visions did not materialize, such as automatic foxhole-digging charges, despite their conceptual appeal. In contrast, the idea of jetpack-equipped soldiers continues to fascinate military planners. The concept has been explored by the Department of Defense since the 1950s, highlighted by the successful demonstration of a jetpack device in 1961. Although technical constraints curtailed its development, the idea remains under consideration, reflecting the enduring appeal of futuristic military technologies.
