Top iPhone Choices for 2024

Published on

The release of new iPhones has been announced, yet the anticipated artificial intelligence features from Apple are not included. These AI functionalities, which include notification summaries and generative AI writing tools, are set to be available with iOS 18.1 starting in October. While these features are expected, more innovative offerings are anticipated to be introduced into 2025, as per Apple’s statements.

This development places the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro in a unique situation, as Apple Intelligence is still evolving even after the iOS 18.1 update is released. This results in consumers once again pondering the annual question: “Is this the year to upgrade?”

On the matter of overall value, the most high-end iPhone is not necessarily the best option for everyone. The ideal purchase is often a balance of features that meet the majority of users’ needs at a reasonable price, which sometimes might be the previous year’s model. Additionally, battery life varies significantly across iPhone models, largely based on the device’s size, with users preferring phones that last all day. Screen size is another consideration, with preferences ranging from compact to the largest possible display, and the current lineup caters to both preferences.

Despite the buzz around new AI features, conventional wisdom on phone purchases still applies: retaining the existing phone is often advisable unless a significant upgrade is desired from models like the iPhone 11 or 12. For those considering the upgrade, there are notable improvements in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, separate from AI advancements. If Apple’s forthcoming AI developments prove impactful, buyers will be prepared.

The baseline iPhone 16 model offers several enhancements, including a 6.1-inch screen, two rear cameras with a vertical layout, customizable Action Buttons, and a new Camera Control button. It includes the Action Button that debuted in the Pro models from the previous year and a Camera Control feature, suggesting a leap in functionality compared to the previous iteration. The model also introduces the A18 chipset, aligning it closer with the Pro models, along with increased RAM, offering longevity in compatibility with future updates.

For those seeking a device with superior battery life, the iPhone 16 Plus stands out thanks to its larger form factor, ensuring extended battery performance over two days, thereby alleviating battery anxiety. This model also features a 6.7-inch display, all while maintaining a lighter weight compared to the Pro Max variant.

When it comes to budget considerations, the iPhone 14 remains a strong contender as an affordable, modern iPhone option priced at $599. Despite its lack of some newer features, such as the Dynamic Island, it offers a solid user experience with Emergency SOS via satellite and improved camera capabilities over the iPhone 13.

Alternatively, for consumers preferring a device with a physical home button, the iPhone SE remains an affordable, compact choice, albeit with trade-offs like a smaller display and older technology.

As for the iPhone 15, Apple has reduced its price to $699 with the release of the 16 series. While a cost-effective choice, it will not be compatible with Apple’s future AI features. However, for those less concerned with having the latest features and more focused on having a large screen device, the iPhone 14 Plus is also available at the same price after discounts.
