Mattel Seriously Plans to Create a View-Master Movie

Published on

Mattel experienced significant financial success last year, largely due to the box office hit directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, the “Barbie” movie. The film’s success was partly attributed to the cinematic trend known as “Barbenheimer.” In light of this, Mattel quickly sought to develop another project by deciding on the next toy to transform into a movie. The company has now chosen the View-Master for its next cinematic endeavor.

According to Variety, Mattel is officially in collaboration with Sony Pictures and Escape Artists, known for projects like “The Equalizer 3” and the anticipated live-action “Masters of the Universe” film, to create a live-action film centering on its View-Master toy, which dates back to the 1940s. Although specific directors, writers, or actors have not yet been announced at the time of publication, the project is moving forward.

Despite the absence of high-profile talent linked to the View-Master film, excitement remains high among Mattel Films president Robbie Brenner and Escape Artist producer Todd Black. Brenner expressed optimism, highlighting the toy’s ability to inspire endless adventures and numerous storytelling opportunities, while enthusing over the collaboration with Sony Pictures and Todd Black to bring a modern version of this iconic toy to audiences.

Black echoed similar sentiments, noting the toy’s historical role in stimulating imagination across age groups. He emphasized the collaboration with Mattel Films as an opportunity to create a new adventure that pays homage to View-Master’s legacy of exploration.

While the View-Master announcement may not be considered a major highlight for upcoming events like the New York Comic Con, Mattel has several other intriguing projects in the pipeline. These include a “Hot Wheels” movie with director J.J. Abrams, a live-action “Barney” movie starring Daniel Kaluuya, a “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots” movie featuring Vin Diesel, and an Uno-inspired action heist film involving rapper Lil Yachty.

Mattel hopes that these diverse projects will replicate the financial success of “Barbie.” Speculation continues regarding potential casting for the View-Master movie.
