Eva Burch, Arizona Senator, Limits Abortion to 13 Words or Less

Published on

Arizona Democratic Sen. Eva Burch made headlines when she revealed her plans to get an abortion in a speech at the state Senate. Burch, who is pregnant with a non-viable pregnancy, wanted to highlight the practical effects of abortion restrictions in Arizona. The first-term lawmaker, who has experience as a nurse practitioner at a women’s health clinic, criticized the state’s laws as being out of touch, pointing out requirements like ultrasounds and misinformation about alternatives to abortion.

In an effort to bring attention to the impact of legislation on real people, Burch shared her personal story and struggles with fertility, including a past abortion. Despite the stigma surrounding abortion, Burch wants the public to understand that her experiences are common. With her re-election campaign underway, Burch also highlighted a proposed ballot measure that would establish a constitutional right to abortion in Arizona, emphasizing the importance of empowering the people to make decisions about their reproductive rights.

While two Democratic-sponsored abortion bills have not advanced in the Arizona Legislature, the state’s Supreme Court is considering the fate of a 1864 law that criminalizes most abortions. Additionally, abortion rights advocates are working to collect signatures to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot, guaranteeing abortion rights up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. This effort aims to protect women’s health and autonomy and provide a direct opportunity for voters to weigh in on this critical issue.
