Deadly Cold in U.S. Claims 80 Lives as Severe Weather Persists

Published on

Extreme cold weather has resulted in at least 83 confirmed weather-related fatalities across the U.S. In Tennessee, 19 people lost their lives due to the cold, and 16 deaths were confirmed in Oregon, including three adults who died when a tree fell on their car. Several other states reported weather-related deaths, bringing the total to 83. Some deaths, however, are still under investigation to confirm their link to the weather conditions.

The dangerous weather, including below-average temperatures and dangerous wind chills, has impacted tens of millions of people. Major power outages have also been reported in several states, including Oregon, Pennsylvania, California, New Mexico, and Indiana. As the icy conditions persist, experts recommend taking precautions when going outside, including layering up and being cautious when operating devices like space heaters. A meteorologist for The Weather Channel also warned of treacherous travel conditions from Oklahoma to Illinois on Monday due to the combination of Arctic air and moisture from the Gulf.

Looking ahead, a thaw is expected mid-week, bringing warmer air and rain, but also the risk of flooding to the Midwest and Northeast. Despite the possible reprieve from the cold, the aftermath of the extreme weather is likely to continue impacting various regions.
