Sony’s PlayStation Head Jim Ryan to Depart in March 2024

Published on

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and PlayStation head Jim Ryan has announced his retirement, effective March 2024. Ryan, who has been with Sony for nearly 30 years, became CEO of SIE in 2019 and played a pivotal role in the successful launch of the PlayStation 5, which has sold over 40 million units. While Ryan did not reveal his plans for the future, his departure will mark a significant change for the gaming industry.

Ryan’s career at Sony began in 1994 when he joined the company’s European entity, then known as Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Over the years, he held various positions within the company, including President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe and head of global sales and marketing. In 2019, Ryan assumed the role of SIE president, taking over from CEO John Kodera.

In Ryan’s absence, Sony President, COO, and CFO Hiroki Totoki will step in as Chairman of SIE in October 2023, before assuming the interim CEO role on April 1, 2024. This leadership transition comes as Sony aims to define the next chapter of PlayStation’s future and determine the succession for the SIE CEO position. Ryan expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work at Sony, highlighting the impact of PlayStation products on millions of lives worldwide and expressing optimism about SIE’s future.
